Progressive overload explained (in plain English)

Progressive overload sounds technical, but it is simply the idea that your training must get harder to make you stronger. Here is how to do it safely.

Progressive overload is the principle that your body adapts to the demand you put on it. To get stronger, that demand has to gradually increase. It sounds technical, but the idea is simple: each week, do a little more than last week.

How to add it

  • Add a small amount of weight to an exercise
  • Add a rep or a set to a session
  • Reduce the rest between sets a little
  • Add a session only when the current week is easy

Add slowly

Progress should be small and steady. If you jump too fast you risk injury and stall. Add a little, hold it for a week or two, then add again. Over months that compounds into real, visible progress.

The workout plans on this site build progressive overload in from week one.
